Elvendreamgirl,I think I just found a new freind. Great post! I couldn't agree with you more. My tat's are exactly that..where I've been, what I've done, what things have strongly influenced me, and what things are my passion.

Seems we have some great tats here... anyone have pictures on the web so we can take a gander?

I was looking at some tattoos over at the site for The Crow (movie and graphic novel) and some are just amazing works of art.

they are amazing, aren't they! The tats that look like photographs are particularly amazing.

[b]Tattoos ... make us part of our tribe or peer group, and they make us unique. It's sort of like the old suitcases with all the stickers on them. This is where I have been, this is what I am.
I totally agree with this. The tattoos I think are misguided are when people chose something that isn't unique and don't have special meaning conveying something about who they are. It makes me shiver when I hear kids say "I'm going to get a tattoo" but when asked of what they don't know - they're getting a tattoo just to have one because they're cool.

Also the problem with tattoos that link us to a specific group is that our peer groups can change. I'd have tattoos myself but I know that I don't know who I really am enough yet.

good point. You should think long and hard before you get one. You don't want to have a huge fire breathing dragon across your face if you are going to be a kindergarden teacher ....

I don't have any tattoos, but I have in interesting story.

Last year (2003) I went on winter Phish tour. And I met this girl who had three tatoos. She had a Phish logo on one thigh and a Primus logo on the other.
On her left butt cheek she had the F word and on her right butt cheek she had "you."
I meet such interesting people...

Temporary tattos with South Park characters used to seem funny to me.
